Upon their arrival at the Larnaca International Airport, on 14 September 2024 they were refused entry into Cyprus. They applied for asylum, their applications were refused, they appealed against those refusals. The fate of their appeals is unknown. On 8 December 2024 they were returned to their country of origin. From the day of their arrival until their return, they were held in a holding room at the Larnaca International Airport. While at the airport, on 28 November 2024 the Ombudsperson published a report following a complaint lodged by the applicants, confirming some of their allegations concerning the conditions of their detention. She emphasised that the area was designated for no more than a twenty ‑ four hour stay and recommended that the applicants be moved to an appropriate place. The applicants complain that the conditions of their detention at the airport holding room, where they were kept between 14 September and 8 December 2024 were inappropriate for a long-term stay. They allege that they were held in a locked room, with no access to natural light or fresh air and without adequate food, cleaning, or laundry services. They rely on Article   3 of the Convention and allege they were subjected to degrading and inhuman treatment.     QUESTION TO THE PARTIES Has there been a violation of the applicants’ rights under Article 3 of the Convention on account of the allegedly poor material conditions in holding room no. 10.029.01 at the Larnaca International Airport where they were held (see Z.A. and Others v.   Russia [GC], nos.   61411/15 and 3 others, §§ 181-86, 21   November 2019).Citations
